About this artwork
This abstract work is an informal mixed-media painting created with structural and diverse materials such as ash, rust, rock flour, and pigments, applied in many layers using a very watery consistency. This results in a highly tactile surface.
The image is created solely with ash, black soot pigment, rust, light gray slate powder, marble dust, and white pigment. White dominates the composition but is constantly punctuated by the gray and rust tones.… Black lies in the background, only occasionally visible. The colors appear powerful and elemental. The title "New Beginning" was chosen because white contains all colors. This suggests that everything is now possible; something new can and should emerge. Together with the rust tone, which represents warmth, and the black, symbolizing grounding and depth, all signs point to a "new beginning."

Katja Gramann is a German artist whose painting follows the tradition of Art Informel. All of her works are consistently abstract. Her works have been exhibited in Germany in numerous solo and group events. Katja Gramann has also been successfully represented by a gallery in Belgium since 2022. Her participation in a summer exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art in London in 2022 also brought her international recognition. The artist pursues three styles in her painting: acrylic painting, mixed media (using ash, pigments, rock flour, charcoal, rust, and paper), and abstract collages made of fine Chinese paper, which Gramann colors herself, dries, and then arranges into a painting in a multi-layered process. Since 2021, Katja Gramann has been teaching painting at independent art academies in Vienna, Kolbermoor, and Bad Heilbrunn.
