About this artwork
This body of work is about female power, owning and claiming it. It is also about calling out the patriarchy and the ways it tries to rob women of their power and agency.
This painting is based on an image of Jessica Simpson, who is an American actress and singer. The quote above it is from an interview of her in a magazine. I thought it was very striking that a woman who is beautiful and famous is played by a man, by pretending she is the only… one he is with.
She is crouched down squatting on the floor, in somewhat of a vulnerable position. But she is also rocking it, with her long hair, killer heels, and attitude. Just imagine if she stood up and walked toward you, her POWER would be all consuming. That is to say, a man who plays a woman is a reflection of that man being not worthy of that woman. She gets up and stands in her full power and walks away from that kind of treatment. She does not have to remain the unwitting woman.
« My works explore the inter-relationship between abstract form and shape - how form speaks to other form, how they intertwine and engage - how you cannot have the one without the other. »
Kerry is an abstract painter who explores the themes of love and connection through the interplay of form and space in her signature collection Metaphorical Relationships. These works are zen-like white organic forms within rich and bold colorfields. They bring positive energy and peacefulness to any space. These works are accompanied with love poems that expand on the work’s interpretation.
Kerry also creates feminist avant-garde large-scale works exploring reclaiming the male gaze through the eyes of a female painter. These works use provocative imagery and words to showcase feminine power and beauty. Her Shadow Stories series explore aspects of our shadow selves.
Kerry holds a Master of Arts from California State University. Her works adorn homes and businesses throughout the United States and Europe. She owns a gallery and artist studio in Solana Beach, CA
