Existing as an irreplicable singularity up close, and as an indistinguishable haze from a distance.
Nothing on this surface can be replicated. The marks, the crystallized residue, the anchovy hardened into the layers — each particular is unrepeatable. This much holds. Step back, and it loosens into haze.
Held close, a life insists on its own singularity — irreducible, set apart from the ordinariness visible in others. With distance, that insistence… loosens. What seemed exceptional loses its edge and drifts toward the same life, lived and passed through.
*Penance* holds both distances without resolving them — the irreplicable surface and what it becomes — and leaves, between them, the moment in which something held high no longer remains so.
