About this artwork
Onyx is Angela Gebhardt at her most distilled — a quiet, architectural force built from shadow, restraint, and the weight of what’s unspoken.
A large, nearly monolithic black field rises and recedes at the same time, shifting from matte to textured to distressed. Subtle rectangles push forward from the surface like buried structures, hints of memory or meaning that were covered, scraped back,… and allowed to breathe again. A single vertical mark interrupts the quiet — not loud, not decorative, but decisive. A line of presence. A declaration.
This is Angela’s language of emotional geometry. Her belief that a painting can hold the architecture of a life: the erased moments, the rebuilt ones, the scars that turn into structure. Onyx reads like a wall that’s been lived with — a surface that has absorbed time, weather, decision, surrender, and resilience.
It’s a work that rewards stillness.

« My Paintings are a “paintumentary.” Each piece is the story of an actual person, their hardships, successes, experiences, or an archetype of myself. »
Known for raw, distressed surfaces and large-scale figurative works, Gebhardt explores identity, resilience, and imperfection through unconventional materials and techniques. For 16 years, he has exhibited during Miami Art Week, building an international collector following.
Together with his wife, contemporary abstract artist Angela Gebhardt, the two maintain distinctly independent practices. Angela is recognized for her large-scale abstractions, layered surfaces, bold use of color and texture, and mixed-media assemblages.
