About this artwork
This painting is inspired by medieval images of the Last Judgement and suffering in Hell.
Here, Hell is imagined as a huge termite mound, teeming with creatures familiar and strange, disgusting and fascinating. It is perhaps alive itself, covered with fleshy orifices which both eject and ingest; creatures crawl out of them and beckon or grab at us to draw us inside. Three sharp rays of light thrust down a man who is being consumed by the mound.…
The surreal image is also inspired by Mozambican paintings evoking the horrors of war, with vibrant colours on a black ground and strange animals conveying a sense of nightmare.
The painting was created using medieval materials and techniques, in hand made egg tempera paint and gold leaf on a wooden panel with a fixed frame (the dimensions given include the frame). It is signed and dated on the reverse and has a picture cord attached so that it is ready to hang.

« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
