This miniature, framed, egg tempera painting shows an exquisite, stylised Japanese carp. The fish appears to flash across the visual space, suggesting the title, 'A Fleeting Thought'.
The fish has been gilded and then painted, with the paint subsequently scratched through to create twinkling golden scales, which sparkle in the light. The deep, black background is animated by ultramarine blue suggestions of water, setting off the bright orange of… the fish.
The fixed frame is distressed solid oak. The dimensions given include the frame; the size of the painted area is 9cm x 9cm.
The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a hook attached so that it is ready to hang; it can also be displayed on a mini easel on a shelf, desk or piano.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
