About this artwork
In this horizontal diptych there is a minimal, geometrical representation of land and sea, using a palette which recurs throughout the artist's work - a black ground, deep red, ultramarine blue and white, with gold leaf. These colours, with the yellow gold, are the elements from which all colour is made.
The tiny dove, flying across the expanse of gold sky, seeds the painting with both narrative and spirituality: the story of Noah's ark and the… return of the dove carrying an olive branch. The painting reflects the artist's feelings during the coronavirus crisis, being about the persistance of hope and resilience in the face of desolation. The landscape is bleak and empty and the dove has a long way to fly, but it promises an eventual return of teaming life and joy.
The two panels are signed and dated on the back and are ready to hang. The dimensions given include a centimetre gap between the upper and lower panels.

« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
