About this artwork
This painting evokes the biblical story of Genesis and the creation of man but was conceived as a non-religious work, celebrating the power of nature and the relationship between man and the universe.
The power of the sun is represented here using punched gold leaf, recalling the haloes of early Italian religious painting. This appropriates divine power for the sun, the source of all life on earth.
The human figure, which is modelled into relief… in gesso using the technique known as pastiglia, is at the complete mercy of the power of nature, lifted into life by the rays of the sun.

« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
