About this artwork
'Floating' is painted in pigments hand ground in egg tempera on an oak panel, with incised water gilding. The deep, semi-transparent ultramarine blue is laid over a black ground, creating a vivid, vibrating colour, shading from total black at the bottom to a bright, white surface where the warm, blue water hits the golden sky.
The female figure is sculpted in plaster and stands proud of the panel in low relief. She hangs at the surface of the water,… her face bathed in rays of golden sunlight, which are incised into the gold leaf.
There is a sense of calm, quiet and wonder. The figure surrenders to the power of nature and to the sensation of floating, suspended above the menacing, black depths.
The square painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang.

« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
