About this artwork
In the legend of Saint Eustace, a Roman soldier, while out hunting, follows a stag into the forest; he then sees a crucifix between its antlers and hears it speak in the voice of Christ. This story is famously depicted in a 1438 painting by the Italian artist, Pisanello. Here, the artist uses the techniques of Pisanello - pigments hand-ground in egg tempera and gold leaf on a wooden panel - to convey a feeling of the miraculous in a minimal, geometrical… style.
The details of the stag, painted in a few strokes of white on gold, appear and disappear, depending on the light, and the ultramarine blue on the black background glows, sometimes warmer, sometimes colder, giving a magical, shifting feel to the painting. The black columns of the trees are like absences, rather than presences, contributing to the sensation of transience.
The painting is signed and dated on the back and has a ring attached so that it is ready to hang.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
