About this artwork
This minimalist , red, gold and black painting depicts a man falling into the void. He throws his head back with a look of terror, his fingers curled, trying to find a grip. A huge, water-gilded segment in the upper left could be a heaven or golden world, from which he is falling, having let go of the rim of the void, or could be a hostile element, thrusting him downwards, as he tries to scramble up.
The painting is inspired by medieval pictures… of the fall of Lucifer and depictions of the descent of the damned into hell. Rodin's 'Gates of Hell' in the Musée D'Orsay in Paris made an enormous impression on the artist as a child, and the figure, sculpted into low relief in gesso, perhaps owes something to that experience.
The paint for this piece was made by hand grinding pigments in egg yolk tempera. These are then painted on a white, gesso ground, applied to an oak panel. The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
