This large egg tempera panel painting depicts the forest in Saint Germain en Laye, where I live. It captures the stillness and wonder of an observer, catching their breath as they stumble upon a stag drinking at a pool.
The colours and the subject reference Pisanello's 'Vision of Saint Eustace' and Uccello's 'The Hunt in the Forest', paintings which are constant references for… me and which were made at a time when the forest of Saint Germain was part of the medieval hunting grounds of the kings of France. The techniques used are from the same period - egg tempera and gold leaf on a wooden panel, with the green paint of the foliage scratched through to reveal the gold beneath. The golden leaves lend an air of magic to the image, which transports the viewer to another time.
The painting has a fixed frame, which forms part of the artwork and is included in the dimensions given. The image size is 50cm x 50cm.
« I seek to rekindle in contemporary viewers a sense of wonder, awe and tenderness in relation to the world around them. »
Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
