About this artwork
This horizontal, framed painting of a bright red dragon on a smokey blue background is inspired by a drawing by the early Italian Renaissance polymath, Taccola.
Using historical materials authentic to the period, Lara Broecke brings her own style to Taccola's idea, extending the dragon with a long, coiled tail and giving it vivid colours to produce a highly decorative and minutely detailed painting. The fantastical image could be an illustration… for the Lord of the Rings or a Chinese dragon with a cunning glint in its golden eye.
The dragon is painted over gold leaf and the red egg tempera paint has then been scratched through to reveal the gold beneath and create the shimmering pattern of scales.The smokey background is painted in deep blue azurite over solid black.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is fixed and forms part of the artwork. The painting is signed and dated on the back and has picture wire attached so that it is ready to hang.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
