About this artwork
In this painting, Lara Broecke uses materials and techniques typical of the middle ages: hand made egg tempera paint and gold leaf on a wooden panel, prepared with gesso. The image is inspired by the famous drawing of a dragon by the early Italian polymath, Taccola.
The red pigment is vermilion, enhanced with cochineal shadows and highlights painted in the orange pigment, known as red lead. The paint has been scratched through, using the 'sgraffito'… technique, to reveal the gold beneath, producing tiny, sparkling scales. The background is painted in blue azurite over a vine black base to create a mysterious, smoky atmosphere.
The dimensions given include the frame, which is integral and forms part of the artwork. A hook as been attached at the back, so that the painting is ready to hang, although it can equally well be displayed on a mini easel, on a shelf or desk.

Lara Broecke's passion for early Italian art was born while living in Florence. She currently lives in France and paints using early Italian techniques - gold leaf and egg tempera paint, made by hand-grinding pigments in egg yolk, on wooden panels coated with gesso. She marries a medieval sensibility with contemporary compositions, creates rich representations of the natural world and man's relationship to it.
