About this artwork
“RP 102” deepens the relationship between figure and atmospheric space that characterizes the Rhine Phenomenon series. Two figures stand on the right edge of the picture as condensations within an open landscape formed from light, fog, and water.
The reduced color palette creates a calm atmosphere and soft transitions; the landscape detaches itself from its representational nature and becomes a phenomenon. The figures do not function narratively,… but rather as points of orientation in a largely dematerialized environment.
The work continues the formal language of the splinter works, but shifts it into a quieter, more landscape-based dimension. In daylight, the temperature and depth of the image subtly change: morning light cools, midday light opens up the space, evening light intensifies the atmosphere. The accompanying Daylight series illustrates these changes throughout the day.
