About this artwork
French institute bucharest - Protected area No 13 Headquarters of the French Institute
The monument was built in 1909 according to the plans of the architect Oscar Mangsch in neo-classical style. At first, it housed a hotel belonging to the French State. Starting from 1944, it become the seat of the French Cultural Institute. Until 1970, the activity of the Institute was suspended due to the breach of the bilateral agreement between Communist Romania… and France. After reopening the French Institute, a plan for building rehabilitation developed through restoring the central building and its annex. The annex got a new function. This rehabilitation was done in a real balance between history, original architectural elements and innovative construction techniques. Thus, in 1974 an auditorium and a cinema were opened.
