About this artwork
I am experimenting with the Chinese woodblock printing technique and the possibilities of combining printing methods with drawing. Chinese woodcuts are printed on a delicate handmade paper with the use of special tools and water. Therefore, it is challenging to manage bigger formats.
I try to combine delicacy of the technique with the intensity of the expression by drawing, first with ink, then painting while mounted paper is still wet - this process… I call “woodcut fresco”. After mounted paper gets dry I use coloured pencils for finer details or even more expressive strokes, depending on the necessity.
The result is complex yet simple combination of different Eastern and Western approaches in creating an artwork.
