About this artwork
Ancestral Plane is part of an evolving body of work that explores guidance, lineage, and the quiet act of listening inward. These paintings are not about catharsis or release; they are about intention. I build restrained, atmospheric fields and introduce a single current — a gesture that moves like a pulse through terrain. That line is not violent. It is circulatory. It suggests transmission across time: between ancestors, memory, and the present… self.
Wax infused with frankincense and myrrh is embedded into the surface, grounding the work in ritual without religion. The scent and materiality create a sensory layer — something felt as much as seen. The paintings ask a simple but ongoing question: Show me the way. Not as a plea to something external, but as a dialogue between past, present, and becoming.
Leigh Sausville works primarily with oil, wax, and textile materials, drawing on her extensive background in fine art, design, and arts administration. Her abstract technique centers on tactile layering, scraping, tearing, and veiling, creating surfaces that mirror fragility and resilience, and inviting material unpredictability as part of her process. Her evocative paintings convey the rawness of memory, grief, and embodied emotion, offering viewers a sensory landscape where interior worlds—messy, vulnerable, yet luminous—are tenderly witnessed and held.
