About this artwork
This poignant abstract piece captures the complex emotional landscape of New York City during the spring of 2020. The canvas serves as both a personal and collective map of the early pandemic. The left side, with its structured, architectural rhythms, represents my bedroom—the primary sanctuary of a world suddenly confined. A dramatic cascade of white paint flows down the center, symbolizing the overwhelming sadness and uncertainty that spilled into… every aspect of daily life, transitioning into the darker, more chaotic representation of the city on the right.
Yet, amid the shadows, the painting is punctuated by vibrant bursts of yellow and orange. These energetic splatters represent the "7 PM cheer" for healthcare workers and the melodies of neighborhood musicians drifting through open windows. W 85th, Spring 2020 is a reflection on how isolated moments of joy can piercingly illuminate a time of profound darkness.
Leigh Sausville works primarily with oil, wax, and textile materials, drawing on her extensive background in fine art, design, and arts administration. Her abstract technique centers on tactile layering, scraping, tearing, and veiling, creating surfaces that mirror fragility and resilience, and inviting material unpredictability as part of her process. Her evocative paintings convey the rawness of memory, grief, and embodied emotion, offering viewers a sensory landscape where interior worlds—messy, vulnerable, yet luminous—are tenderly witnessed and held.
