About this artwork
Dictatorship, Democracy
The relationship between the state and the people under a dictatorship is that of a hammer and nails. Under a democracy, it is that of a screwdriver and screws. The people (whether "nails" or "screws") are obligated to obey explicit and implicit laws and directives of the state. The laws are, of course different. The method of influence on nails versus the method of influence on screws are also undoubtedly different.

« Sculpture, to me, is an idea captured in an aesthetic form. »
Leonid Filitsyan is an established, US-based sculptor who has exhibited his work at length in his hometown of New York. Since discovering Plasticine at age four, Filitsyan committed himself to producing a body of work that explores the material's full potential. In particular, his artwork serves to highlight its simultaneous tactility and beauty. Filitsyan's principal theme is the human condition: gender, emotions, the relationship between man and state. These themes and others are explored with technical expertise and a characteristic mastery of tension and drama.
