About this artwork
Since moving to NZ in 2001 my obsession with with having a volcano across the water has never let up - it becomes as much about the space surrounding it, the sky and the reflections. It is my 'go to' subject for my own personal therapy. This piece depicts the classic lighthouse in the foreground and has a more playful brush stroke than my usual approach.

« I follow my heart, passions, and observations. The only challenge is being true to myself and my creation. It’s all about expressing myself in the moment. »
Liam Downes is an experienced artist based in New Zealand whose paintings have been exhibited internationally. He describes his works as often depicting the world around him, ranging from landscapes to cityscapes, life drawings, and social commentary. While identifying with expressionism, Downes' distinctive compositions are also imbued with a variety of styles. He primarily creates with acrylics, ink, and collage on canvas or wood.
