Who hasn't ever tried the hanging pig? This childhood challenge, simple and dizzying at the same time, I bring back to life here with a burlesque and jubilant energy.
In this painting, I depict two young women attempting the exercise: one grips the pole with determination, her red dress with white polka dots swirling with the effort, her blond hair standing out against the dark background. The other has already fallen—suspended upside down, enveloped… in blues and grays, she embodies that absurd and exhilarating moment we have all experienced, head down, the world turned upside down.
I wanted the background to burst forth in yellow and black, like a playing arena poised between exertion and laughter. For that is precisely the magic of the hanging pig: this unique blend of concentration and uncontrollable laughter, of hard-won balance and deliberate fall. I capture this suspended moment between childhood and performance, between play and art—and I remind us all that grace often arises where it is least expected.
