About this artwork

The brown hyena — elusive, often maligned — steps into a dreamscape woven from childhood memory, ancestral intuition, and the wild unpredictability of the Namib desert. This painting emerges from a desire to reclaim the hyena from the distortions of colonial storytelling, where scavengers were painted as outcasts and villains. Instead, I render the animal as a liminal guide, moving through a terrain of colour and rupture that mirrors my own hybrid… identity. The layers of abstraction echo the instability of ecosystems under pressure, while the hyena’s gaze holds a quiet resilience born of adaptation. As conservation becomes increasingly urgent, this work reminds us that survival is often a collaborative, communal act — one in which misunderstood species have long been experts. The piece acts as a call to soften our judgements and honour the intelligence of those who endure in the margins.
