About this artwork
In the manner of vegetal origami, each plane overlaps without ever coinciding: a green too deep rubs against a blue-black of crushed berry, a leaf vein topples under a cast shadow from elsewhere. This forced unfolding prevents the eye from grasping the plant in one go — one must follow the fracture of a branch, stumble on a burst piece of fruit, return to the confused mass of foliage. The image thus transforms the experience of the bush into a visual… walk, where the gaze oscillates between the feeling of a dense thicket and the almost tactile insistence on a fragmented detail, as when, at the hedge, one moves from the overall view to the hand that picks.
Lodewijk van Bodeghem, a Belgian artist and accomplished painter, works with gouache and sculpture, drawing on his solid training at the ERG in Brussels. His techniques combine layering opaque gouache and creating sculptures that function as three-dimensional paintings, playing with the tension between plane and space. His style oscillates between figuration and abstraction, precision and gestural freedom, inspired by virtual and historical imagery. The works he creates immerse the viewer in a visual poetry, a suspension of gaze between surface and depth, awakening curiosity and wonder.
