About this artwork
The artist is interested in the way human beings behave when in a crowd.
People move in the space following an unwritten plan like storms of birds in the sky. They adjust the way to avoid collision or maybe to come close to other people to have a feeling of presence. These are single persons who through their interactions, movements, relationships, or dependencies, form a unified whole. The complexity of directions of single people forms an entity… of its own. Any relation to what in physics is called complex systems?
Techanique: Encaustic is and ancient technique. Colours a made of pigments in molten beeswax and rapidly applied on a rigid support. Pigments in this way are protected by the wax from external agents. This allows conservation of brilliance and duration
« The aim is to express in the pictures sentiments felt during an action, thoughts, dialogue, and communication while a situation is happening. »
Luciana Mathioudakis is an Italian-Greek artist currently based in Brussels. She is an experienced artist who has spent more than two decades studying painting in various studios and workshops. While for the majority of her career Mathioudakis worked exclusively with oil and pastel paints, she recently switched to beeswax applied to panel, a system that dates back to ancient Greece. Her work explores how people orient themselves in various spaces, especially within crowds, as well as the broader theme of movement as a form of dialogue between people.
