About this artwork
I am fascinated by the way people behave unconsciously. They are caught in an instant of their life.
There is no before and no after.
It is interesting to paint bodies moving but also depicts the souls of people going about their business, thinking of their lives, their wishes, their aims.
TIME: The fact that encaustic is a technique more than two thousand years old suggest that the theme of movement of people is also very old. As if it had already… existed and it repeats.
SPACE: the white background represent any possible space
The use of encaustic adds a rich texture and depth to the piece. The roughness of the medium and the way it holds pigments conveys a sense of warmth and immediacy that can often be lost in more traditional painting technique.
The artist is representing people who interact in space and time, each of them following a sort of prearranged plan.
She feels that these humans act as individuals but at the same time as in collective performance.
« The aim is to express in the pictures sentiments felt during an action, thoughts, dialogue, and communication while a situation is happening. »
Luciana Mathioudakis is an Italian-Greek artist currently based in Brussels. She is an experienced artist who has spent more than two decades studying painting in various studios and workshops. While for the majority of her career Mathioudakis worked exclusively with oil and pastel paints, she recently switched to beeswax applied to panel, a system that dates back to ancient Greece. Her work explores how people orient themselves in various spaces, especially within crowds, as well as the broader theme of movement as a form of dialogue between people.
