About this artwork
I like to represent people who interact in space and time, each of them following a sort of prearranged plan.
These humans act as individuals but at the same time behave as in collective performance, a sort of consciousness common to everyone.
I paint bodies moving but also depict the souls of people going about their business, thinking of their lives, their wishes, their aims.
She paints bodies moving but also depicts the souls of people going… about their business, thinking of their lives, their wishes, their aims. One can touch their bodies but not their consciousness.
SPACE: the white background represents any possible space we can be living in.
For me the use of encaustic adds a rich texture and depth to the piece. The roughness of the medium and the way it holds pigments conveys a sense of warmth and immediacy that can often be lost in more traditional painting techniques.
« The aim is to express in the pictures sentiments felt during an action, thoughts, dialogue, and communication while a situation is happening. »
Luciana Mathioudakis is an Italian-Greek artist currently based in Brussels. She is an experienced artist who has spent more than two decades studying painting in various studios and workshops. While for the majority of her career Mathioudakis worked exclusively with oil and pastel paints, she recently switched to beeswax applied to panel, a system that dates back to ancient Greece. Her work explores how people orient themselves in various spaces, especially within crowds, as well as the broader theme of movement as a form of dialogue between people.
