About this artwork
I live in Northern Finland, close to the Arctic Circle, where the weather can shift dramatically and reveal nature at its most powerful. A severe snowstorm that swept through just yesterday became the spark for this artwork. Instead of capturing the storm’s harshness, I wanted to offer a calm, safe, almost meditative view into it — a moment of beauty within the chaos.
Painted on plexiglass, the work creates a luminous, translucent illusion of swirling… snow. When placed in front of a window, natural light brings the scene to life, allowing the storm to unfold gently in your space. The piece has holes at the top for easy hanging and is signed on both the front and the back.

Maija Vanhatapio is an award-winning painter and sculptor based in Finland whose works have been exhibited nationally. For her, the essence of nature is a subject through which she best expresses herself. In addition, it also allows her to open up a dialogue about its preservation and multidimensionality. Vanhatapio creates in an abstract style with a preference for mixed media. She paints using acrylics, oils, charcoal, India ink, pencils, and collage on canvas or wood.
