This work explores the intimate bond between earth's cool coastal waters and its sun-drenched soils, mirroring the interconnectedness of the human experience. A visual rhythm resonates across the canvas, the inland pulse and the salt-sprayed sea are a single expression. There is no definitive line between land and water and no true separation between individuals.
The interconnected drill holes represent a communal bedrock—a foundation formed by… shared history and modified by the internal dialogue of our collective experiences. This permeable layer, rich in the minerals of our overlapping stories, shows we are not isolated islands but physically inseparable parts of the same expression. Shaped by the same tides, formed of the same earth, this work was created as one - in a singular, rolled form - revealing its true, interconnected nature only through its final unfolding.

« Membrane Art is a doorway to endless possibilities. It’s heavily dependent upon the geometric surface which underpins it, and until it's unraveled, we are blind to all possible outcomes. »
Australian mixed-media artist Malcolm Koch’s signature practice, "Membrane Art", explores how a single physical action made on a severely curved surface produces multiple, interconnected expressions once flattened. Working across linen, synthetic membranes, and copper, Koch tightly coils or folds the medium before applying marks in the form of paint, cuts, heat, or chemical reactions. Once released and flattened, what appear as separate, disparate gestures on the plane are revealed as a single, unified action governed by the curve's geometry.
This deep focus on limitation and altered perception stems from Koch's personal history, growing up with a profoundly deaf father and a deaf-blind mother. Within this practice, restriction is transformed into capability; the physical blind spots of the curved surface do not limit the work but forge entirely new ways to construct meaning. Ultimately, the finished flat surface acts as a permanent visual archive of the memory of the curve.
