About this artwork
For the past years I have been photographing a new generation of artists, spectators and performers that have now moved to the borders of Bushwick and beyond to find their own safe space, leaving Williamsburg behind as a creative space.
Trying to understand my own desires and my role as spectator-artist-photographer, the notion of identity submerged and I started questioning the blurring boundaries between performance and life: Watching you watching… me. I had all my inhibitions slide off as I started to photograph and engage with young artists and performers that I encountered in Bushwick, Berlin and elsewhere.
As I went deeper into photographing my subjects I found a common cord between performers and spectators -These artists and the people that were sharing their experiences were veering toward the extremes to provoke themselves (and their audience) to confront sexual and visual ways of participation by challenging social norms.

Mara Catalan is a photographer based in the United States who has exhibited her art nationally, as well as in Estonia, Spain, Cuba, and Switzerland. Her artistic expression most often speaks of the world her. Catalan's pieces are "part diary, part autobiography, and part personal documentary". She most often photographs using black and white film, employing various cameras, depending on her subject. For her, the work isn't completed until she prints it out in the darkroom.
