About this artwork
In this painting I present a figure caught in the quiet aftermath of performance. In Portrait of a Washed Up Actor, the central character sits exposed against a bright, theatrical blue, their body traced in restless lines that suggest both fragility and endurance. Around them, fragmented faces, symbols, and mechanical forms crowd the space like echoes of past roles and fading applause. Layers of marks, erased text, and graffiti-like gestures speak…
to memory, reinvention, and the erosion of identity. I approach the canvas as a stage where the actor remains, long after the audience has gone, surrounded by the noise of former selves and unfinished stories. 🎭🖌️

Marc Rayner is an Australian artist based in Sweden who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Sweden, Monaco, France, Qatar, Italy, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Japan. The key to his artworks is the creation of 'quasi-landscapes' rich in text and design, or flat and almost devoid of information. This 'distorted zone' is a place where Rayner's tormented, disenfranchised, and often unfortunate characters exist. He is drawn to outsider artistic styles and naive art in broader terms.
