About this artwork
This artwork is a playful look at the future. In future primitives the cave wall is replaced by the street. The future beckons the distant past where mark making speaks to the humanities condition.
In Future Primitives, I imagine a distant time where humanity begins again, leaving marks as cave dwellers once did. These figures record what we believed defined us—systems, anatomy, fragments of knowledge—rendered in a raw, symbolic language. Despite… their complexity, they feel stripped back, almost ritualistic. I am exploring a collapse of progress into image, where memory lingers but clarity fades, and the act of marking becomes both survival and myth-making.
« Our world is tearing itself apart environmentally, socially, and economically. It is my job to highlight the faults as I see them. I disguise dark themes with color and rhythmical lines. »
Marc Rayner is an Australian artist based in Sweden who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Sweden, Monaco, France, Qatar, Italy, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Japan. The key to his artworks is the creation of 'quasi-landscapes' rich in text and design, or flat and almost devoid of information. This 'distorted zone' is a place where Rayner's tormented, disenfranchised, and often unfortunate characters exist. He is drawn to outsider artistic styles and naive art in broader terms.
