About this artwork
"Tree Island" belongs to my "Forest Weavings" series. In the middle of the open meadow, this dense group of trees stands like a silent ship in the light. The trunks barely protrude; only the shared canopy traces a compact form against the vast sky. The sidelight casts bright edges onto the foliage and creates long bands of shadow across the area—as if the island were projecting its outline onto the grass.
The monochrome, cool sepia tone strips… the image of any decorative color and instead emphasizes forms, contrasts, and the interplay of light. This transforms the scene from an idyllic postcard image into a quiet, almost timeless vision. I'm fascinated by how community and individuality overlap here: many trees that, from a distance, appear as a single entity. For me, "Tree Island" is an image of protection and retreat—a place where one could find inner peace before venturing back out into the open landscape.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language.
