About this artwork
In "The Encounter," I explore physical and spiritual intimacy: Two figures, perceived as male, stand facing each other, naked and wounded, connected by their gaze and light. The earthy, dramatic palette plays with religious iconography and queer expressionism. The title deliberately remains open to interpretation—love, power, desire, memory. A halo of light, a martyr's cross on the upper arm, and a second figure, simultaneously protective and insistent,…
intensify the tension between desire and shame, vulnerability and resistance. The bodies, too, remain culturally ambiguous: difference becomes possibility. For me, "The Encounter" is a multifaceted work about intimacy, identity, and visibility. It depicts not only bodies but also traces: emotional, historical, spiritual. Through bold brushstrokes and symbolism, I aim to formulate queer narratives that are as universal as they are personal, as vulnerable as they are resilient.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
