About this artwork
In "Les Fleurs du Mal II," I depict a field of withered sunflowers at night, like a small gathering of spirits. Some flower heads bear seemingly smiling features—a silent, slightly uncanny echo of the vibrant life they once possessed. The deep black of the "Nocturnes" swallows the context; only around the central sunflower does a faint yellowish glow linger, a last vestige of light and warmth. remnants of nature emerge "flowers of evil," projection surfaces for melancholy, premonitions of death, and defiant perseverance—as with Baudelaire, decay and ugliness give rise to poetry and beauty. The night creates the distance in which these forms become signs—fragile, ironic, poised between dignity and decay.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance.
