About this artwork
This image is part of the series "When Stones Speak" and my Tatort series. At night, I capture a wall with barbed wire on top; the angle is chosen so that inside and outside remain unclear. The harsh light carves contours into the stone and wire, the sky lies a deep black above. I work with a tight crop and strong contrast so that texture and line speak: rough mortar ridge, cracked joints. This wall doesn't just seem to block, it speaks – of control,…

The title "Tatort" triggers a series of associations: border, camp, industrial area. Whether I'm standing in front of the wall or behind it remains open; the only certainty is the tension and menace in the image. I'm interested in this uncertainty, in which external space becomes an internal state and speaks of fear and helplessness, but also of defiance and demarcation. Thus, the stone becomes a dramatic counterpart – it doesn't explain, but rather gets under one's skin.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery.
