About this artwork
I gaze at the curved tracks that wind their way into the tunnel as if into the belly of the city. The curve guides the eye, the parapets rhythmize the space, and between old buildings and new facades, the track becomes a pulsating axis. I am interested in this intrusion of traffic into the urban fabric: a cut that simultaneously connects and dissects the city.
Desaturation removes color from the subject, allowing structure, light, and rhythm to… speak for themselves. Shades of gray make the architecture legible, stripping the image of its anecdotal quality and lending it timelessness. In this way, the photograph transforms from reportage to drawing: lines, grids, textures. The tunnel absorbs movement, the city responds with an echo – a silent spatial enfilade that interweaves inside and outside.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
