"Lindenau Harbor" is a double portrait on the water. Two former warehouses face each other like voice and echo; the rear building seems like the shadow of the front one. The austerity and suggested frontality could be reminiscent of the Bechers, but I'm interested in more than typology here: the landscape, the expansive breath of the basin, the lines of the quay and sky that carry the scene. The chorographically placed buildings are remnants of an… urban redevelopment—witnesses to a larger plan that was once intended to open the city of Leipzig to the Elbe and remained unfinished. In the scars of the facades, in the peeling lettering, lies a quiet chronicle of hope and demolition. I work with calm and distance so that the composition can speak: water, mass, space. Thus, industrial legacy becomes a painting about transitions—about what remains when visions change, and about the dignity of things that nevertheless endure.
Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
