About this artwork
Ich rücke dem Beton so nahe, bis er zu Korn und Rhythmus wird. Die extreme Körnung übersteigert die Haut des Materials; Brüstungen, Kanten und Schatten staffeln sich seriell zu einer strengen Partitur. Zwischen Masse und Leere entstehen Klingen aus Licht. Mich fasziniert der Brutalismus gerade wegen dieser Radikalität: Er tarnt nichts — béton brut zeigt, wie ein Gebäude denkt.
Für viele Künstler ist das ein Magnet: die Ehrlichkeit des Materials,… das Skulpturale der Last, die Geometrie, die sich mit jedem Sonnenstand neu schreibt und Zeit speichert. Die reduzierte Tonung entzieht das Bild der Nostalgie und gibt ihm Gewicht. So wird „Brutal I“ zum Portrait einer Architektur, die nicht schmeichelt und gerade dadurch neben abweisender Schroffheit auch Würde und eine spröde Schönheit entfaltet.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences.
