About this artwork
"Veil" shows me how a space breathes when it conceals itself. The scaffolding stands like a temporary bridge that leads nowhere, and the nets hang in folds as if holding the unfinished together. Behind them, I sense steps, edges, openings—everything is there and simultaneously withdrawn. The light sweeps through the fabric, softening the surface and uncertain the contours; what is solid suddenly seems provisional.
In the "Labyrinth" series, I'm… interested in this intermediate state: a place in a mode of concealment that promises more than it reveals. I photograph the moment in which the view is not obstructed, but slowed down. The veil enjoins patience; it says: Look more closely, go slower. Thus, the construction site becomes the image of an inner movement—a tentative forward movement in which curiosity and caution take the same pace. Behind the fabric lies no less of a secret, just one more.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language.
