About this artwork
In "Black Hole," the gateway is not a promise, but an absorption. I deliberately avoided creating the scene in black and white: the subdued coloring keeps the materiality alive—stone remains stone, air remains air—and precisely because of this, the opening appears all the more unnatural, as if it had swallowed all color, all information. The composition is defined by a geometry of hardness: the massive wall as a block, the steps as a graduated instruction,…
the rectangular opening as a radical negation. Nothing is ornamental; everything is deliberate. The defiance lies not in spectacle, but in stillness: a structure that neither explains itself nor offers any dialogue.
What interests me here is the threshold as a form of power. The darkness is not "depth" in the romantic sense, but rather a controlled unknowing. One can look into it, but not recognize; one can approach, but not be sure of being admitted: maximally present, maximally opaque.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences.
