"Waiting for the Lions" takes my series "Silent Places" into an artificial rocky landscape, a space without time. The white, stretched-out hare bodies lie like islands of snow on the concrete floor. Nothing moves—and yet everything is charged. I observe the peaceful calm that emanates from them, this soft gesture of sleep—like the romantic interpretation of Thanatos; at the same time, there is an expectation that something greater could claim the… space. The title holds the breath. Where the lions are missing, their shadows are still noticeable. I work with reduction, allowing the colors to sink into muted tones and maintaining my distance. The light casts a sobering cast. This creates a silent, intermediate state: neither threat nor security, but a fragile calm under pressure. Viewers are invited to prolong the moment, to count their breaths, to examine their own memories. Perhaps in the end, only this remains: a space that can endure grace and fear lying side by side—like
Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
