About this artwork
This is the second oil painting conceived as a twin to the Herb Tree. This painting shows a woman’s eye, a black and white diamond patterned square, with a rose growing out of one of the black diamonds.
Just like its twin, this painting makes the same reference to the question of how we interpret what we see and the consequential associations we form in our minds. The rose growing out of a surface pattern has surrealistic overtones.

« The driving force behind my work has always been the constant pursuit of a more succinct expression of what the ongoing exploration into cultural icons reveals. »
Marcella Lassen is an experienced artist based in Switzerland whose paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions nationally, as well as in Germany and Austria. In her most recent works, she explores themes including the ephemeral, how the passage of time underlies every aspect of life, the icons of society, and nature. While her compositions are vividly contemporary, Lassen employs the traditional techniques of the old masters.
