About this artwork
Colonial Romanticism reflects the longing for a supposedly orderly past—and questions it. The work examines the mechanisms of nostalgic idealization: how we smooth over memories, paint over ruptures, and aestheticize power relations.
Behind the decorative appearance lies a quiet unease. The shimmering surface is not harmless, but rather the expression of a gaze that has never fully abandoned possession and control. The work confronts the inertia… of our memory – and the comfortable illusion that 'everything was better in the past.'

Marek Eibert primarily uses painting, drawing, and experimental mixed forms, influenced by his training at the Bauhaus University in Weimar and his many years of work in Leipzig. His technique combines elements of bad painting, figurative allusions, and deliberate disruptions—often complemented by collage and spontaneity. In his works, social criticism, humor, and irony merge into a raw visual language that triggers intense contemplation and critical reflection in the viewer.
