About this artwork
I recognized that coral’s struggle has some similarities to the build and destroy bronze casting process that I’ve worked with for decades. Likewise, coral’s cycle of creations, destructions, and struggling revivals depend on action. What started as an analogy had become all too soon a tragedy? Reefs denigrated in 2025 to be the first global eco-system to collapse announced by the Tipping Point Report. Consider the parallel sequence: an armature… is built, not unlike ancient mineral boulder. Clay is built over the skeleton like the colorful polyps colonizing a reef’s surface. To transition the pliable to permanence, a mold is made and the clay destroyed similar to bleaching or stripping the algae. Without its algae partner, polyp, the animal tissue of coral, bleaches. Wax is cast in the mold and resculpted, like the reef rebounds if the water temperature cools and algae returns. A ceramic shell coats the wax inside for a second rebirth, poured bronze is another creation like a reef.

Margot McMahon is a sculptor, painter, and writer whose environmentalist background infuses her work across multiple mediums, supported by degrees in Environmental Journalism, Art, and an MFA from Yale. She uses mixed painting techniques inspired by Old Masters, and sculpts in clay and bronze, exploring a dynamic interplay of realism and abstraction with a focus on rhythm, light, and natural form. Her art powerfully conveys empathy, urgency, and a profound reverence for both individual stories and the living world, inviting viewers into an unguarded, deeply felt response to social justice and environmental fragility.
