About this artwork
What the Ring of Fire paintings share with sculptural practice is my search for the relationship between repetition and differentiation. I explore in artmaking the way small and large forms rhyme in the composition, the way open spaces and solid forms have a rhythm that makes sense of the entire piece. I am enthralled with the balance of realism and abstraction in a human face and a polyp portrait. My polyp portraits depict various colonies competing… for light and space, each species differentiated in color and texture while forming an ecosystem whose diversity gives it resilience. Biologically, this essential building block covers 1% of the ocean floor while feeding 25% of ocean life. The struggle for space in the sun is evident in the paintings. I have painted coral portraits utilizing Technique mix; a process Leonardo DaVinci learned from Anthony Van Dyck for his Monalisa. A foundation of black and white tempera values is glazed with vibrantly colorful oils.
Margot McMahon is a sculptor, painter, and writer whose environmentalist background infuses her work across multiple mediums, supported by degrees in Environmental Journalism, Art, and an MFA from Yale. She uses mixed painting techniques inspired by Old Masters, and sculpts in clay and bronze, exploring a dynamic interplay of realism and abstraction with a focus on rhythm, light, and natural form. Her art powerfully conveys empathy, urgency, and a profound reverence for both individual stories and the living world, inviting viewers into an unguarded, deeply felt response to social justice and environmental fragility.
