With Trace IV, I wanted to push my research toward the essential, working on the absence of color to give voice to pure matter. In this work, black is not a limit, but an infinite space where light is captured and shaped by the grooves I trace on the canvas.
My gesture follows a circular motion, an instinctive rhythm that seeks to give form to what I call "subtle substance." I layered plaster and glue to create a tactile orography: every ridge and… valley you see on the surface is a physical trace of my passage, a solidified energy.
I like to define this work as a "vibrant silence." Depending on how the light hits the canvas throughout the day, the work reveals different details, constantly shifting and inviting the viewer to a moment of deep meditation. For me, Trace IV is the perfect balance between the strength of relief and the elegance of emptiness.
Maria Dobrican uses organic materials and natural supports such as jute, poplar wood, and paper, drawing on a rich background of experimentation with traditional and innovative techniques. Her research is expressed through a minimal and material abstraction that balances geometric rigor and organic spontaneity, with layers of coffee, ink, oil, and turpentine. Her works evoke profound silences and interior landscapes, conveying a sense of meditative peace and inviting the viewer to explore the threshold between matter and spirit.
