That morning, the dining room was bathed in sunlight. The canary, usually locked in a cage, had been moved outside. As I watched him, I wondered what it felt like to live in that golden prison. One day, moved by compassion, I decided to free him. With my heart in my throat, I opened the door of the cage. Frightened, the canary fluttered frantically and then, with a leap, launched himself into the sky. I watched him move away, smaller and smaller,…
until he became a black dot. I greeted him with a smile, happy to have given him freedom. I knew that they would soon find out about me, but at that moment I felt only joy and relief.
