About this artwork
For this sculpture, I work with a cement core, which I then cover with papier-mâché. I refine the surface with a rust and copper patina. This step is crucial for me: oxidation cannot be completely controlled. I can only initiate the process – how the color develops, what structures emerge, and how the rust and copper are distributed is determined by the material itself.
This unpredictable aspect of the creative process fascinates me most. It brings… a vibrancy to the sculpture that I cannot plan. The figure thus acquires its own story and its own unique expression.
In Silence of the Queen, I combine stability and delicacy. The figure's serene posture and organic patina reflect a quiet, inner strength. In this way, the sculpture becomes a kind of queen who needs no words to convey her presence.
