About this artwork
"Kabuki Theatre" is an illustration created with colored pencils (Faber Castell polychromos) on 200g/m2 A5 paper. The work is inspired by a print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), one of the last great Japanese masters of woodblock printing.
Kabuki (歌舞伎) is the epic form of traditional Japanese theatre. Centred on a spectacular yet codified style of acting, it is distinguished by the elaborate makeup of the actors and the abundance of stage devices… designed to emphasize the climaxes and plot twists of the play.
